In July, our cooperative received $52,415.20 through the Kupa'a Kaua'i program to carry out the relocation of our production meter from the old mauka site to a more optimum site within the distribution system for MIC. For many years, there has been a significant discrepancy between the total usage from our members meters and the total amount our water supplier bills for each month. The old billing meter was suspected to be inaccurate and it is not suitable as a drinking water system meter. In addition, the distance between the old meter and the 1st connection in the MIC system is around 1/2 mile. This left considerable distance where there could be leaks in the delivery pipe between that meter and the MIC system.
Ladd Construction, with their team of experienced water system technicians, handled the job with great skill and coordination. With minimum shut-down time, the new meter and backflow preventer were installed and are now up and running as January 1, 2021.
The results have already shown a dramatic difference in the percentage of unmetered "non-revenue" water compared to the old meter.
We are extremely grateful to the County of Kaua'i for considering the merits of this project. By awarding our cooperative the funding to help our farmers during the economic turndown of the Covid 19 pandemic, MIC is able to pass on these savings at this critical time. All of our members will continue to benefit
